The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne will meet Kjarten Rudd on Friday 13 July, who has been bringing students to Eastbourne for more than 30 years. Since 1972 he has been bringing students to the town from Lier in Norway.
The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Mary Pooley says, “I am sure many things about Eastbourne have changed over the years Kjarten has been bringing students to Eastbourne. Students play a big role in Eastbourne and the organisations are constantly working towards improving the service the youngsters receive.”
Kjarten has brought students to Eastbourne because Eastbourne has a good sunshine record, beaches, parks, sports facilities, access to London and other coastal towns, Beachy Head, historical sites including Pevensey Castle and it’s a great way to learn the English language and culture by staying in the town.
Students from Norway have returned with Kjarten year on year because their parents have had very positive reports on their children's safety and experiences in Eastbourne.
Mr Rudd Kjarten has escorted, taught and arranged programmes for, on average, 100 students a year. Over 35 years this means that at least 3,500 young people have experienced the hospitality of Eastbourne residents, businesses and organisations in the town. Students also add to the economy of the town as they spend in shops, cafes and clubs and host families are paid a small fee to accommodate them.
