Residents have been given the support of Eastbourne Borough Council against plans for a proposed bus lane and cycle track between Gilbert Road and Whitley Road.
Further to a recent consultation by East Sussex County Council Transport and Environment Department on updated plans giving residents two options. Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor David Tutt, says, “I do not believe that the introduction of a bus lane at this point is necessary and I support the concerns of local residents in the area that this is likely to lead to rat-runs in local neighbourhood roads including those crossed frequently by young children to access the Seaside recreation ground.”
As the consultation ended before it was possible to take it to a Cabinet meeting the following statement was backed by the Council’s Cabinet.
“In response to your email of the 28 June, the Eastbourne Cabinet do not believe that the introduction of a bus lane at this point is necessary and support the concerns of local residents in the area that such introduction is likely to lead to the introduction of rat-run in local neighbourhood roads (including those crossed frequently by young children to access the Seaside recreation ground.)
The Cabinet would urge County to abandon these plans and instead concentrate their efforts on resolving the considerable problems of traffic management which exist at the Tesco roundabout, which regularly cause long delays to all highway users, including buses.”
