Popular Marathon Boosts Local Charities

Beachy Head Marathon
Local charities are getting a boost this week as the Beachy Head Marathon makes record donations following its spectacular 2006 success.

The annual event which regularly donates its profit to charity, enjoyed its best ever year with 1,750 runners, joggers and walkers taking part in what is now widely acknowledged as one of the UK’s biggest marathons.  The bumper entry means 12 local charities and voluntary organisations will benefit from last year’s event, which produced an impressive 18% increase in funds.

The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Colin Belsey said “The Beachy Head Marathon is an autumn highlight for our tourist industry and to make the event happen, we rely on many volunteer organisations to help steward and provide safety assistance during the event.”

“The cheery welcome of volunteer marshals at checkpoints and refreshment stations is frequently applauded by entrants, and I am sure this is one of the reasons why the event is so popular.  Therefore I am delighted we are able to give a special thank you to each of the valuable organisations who played a part in making the event such a success.”

The Mayor of Eastbourne will present all 12 organisations with a total of £3,795 this Wednesday at the Town Hall. Recipients include St John Ambulance, Sussex Police Volunteer Cadet Corps, Eastbourne Sea Cadets, Hailsham Rotary Club, Eastbourne Rotary Club, Raynet, Eastbourne Coastguard, Beachy Head Coastguard, Beachy Head Ramblers, Eastbourne Voluntary Lifeguards and Seaford Striders.  The Mayor’s Charity will also receive a donation, which this year is raising funds for the RNLI.

The Beachy Head Marathon returns on Saturday 27 October and entries open in April.  To enter visit www.beachyheadmarathon.org.uk or telephone 01323 502907.
