Military Band Concert Raises Money

At The Concert
15 February 2007

On Sunday afternoon, 11 February, the Congress Theatre was filled with the sounds of the world famous Band of the Irish Guards, who came straight from their duties at Buckingham Palace to perform.  The concert was in support of the Mayor’s nominated charity the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (Eastbourne) and the Army Benevolent Fund, and raised more than £3,000 for the two charities.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Colin Belsey, says, “Not only am I absolutely delighted that so many residents and visitors came along to enjoy this superb concert but also more funds were raised for my chosen charity, bringing the target of £20,000 even closer.  A big thank you must go to the Band of the Irish Guards who so generously gave of their time”

The large audience was treated to a lively programme of wide ranging and entertaining music, including a special performance by the Band’s very own swing section.

The Irish Guards were formed on 1 April 1900 on the expressed wish of HM Queen Victoria to commemorate the bravery of the many Irish Regiments who had fought in the South African campaigns.

Over the years the Band has toured extensively visiting Australia (and even playing at the Sydney Opera House), New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Hong Kong and Japan.
