Climate Changes Ahead for Eastbourne

9 february 2007

The Government believes that climate change is the greatest long-term challenge facing the world today and there is an urgent need for action.  Eastbourne Borough Council is aiming to meet this challenge by updating the Planning Policy Statement to help deliver sustainable developments for the future.

The evidence that climate change is happening and that man-made emissions are its main cause is strong and indisputable.  If these changes deepen and intensify, as they no doubt will without the right local and global responses, the UK could experience more extreme weather events including hotter, drier summers, flooding and rising sea levels leading to coastal realignment.

Councillor Patrick Warner, Cabinet Spokesperson for Planning says, “Following two very dry summers and a continuous hosepipe ban, together with future changes in our climate, this will without doubt affect Eastbourne and there will be the likelihood of flooding.  It is therefore excellent news that the Council have reacted quickly and have put various adaptation measures in place to meet the effects of climate change.”
