Science Park

18 December 2007

A project team is being set up to create a delivery plan for the creation of a Science Park in the Sovereign Harbour area of Eastbourne.

The Economic Blueprint for the Eastbourne Hailsham Triangle has shown a need for Eastbourne to provide opportunities for business growth and investment, and to retain graduates and those with higher level qualifications in the workforce.

The high quality of life here on the south coast makes the town attractive to businesses that can rely on electronic communication, or offer high value added services.  The Science Park would provide first class modern business accommodation, the highest levels of broadband accessibility, high sustainability criteria on the buildings and low energy consumption.

Cabinet Spokesperson for the Economy, Councillor Wallis says ‘It is important that we develop the economy in Eastbourne so that it continues to be a place where people will want to live and work.  We will benefit greatly if we can retain the graduates who are leaving the town to work in other areas, and the availability of good quality jobs would encourage local people to stay on in education.”

The development of a Science Park would help the Council meet its own objectives and those of the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) set out in the Regional Economic Strategy (RES).  Objectives include increasing the number of businesses working with Universities, increasing the investment in research and development and increasing the number of new businesses.
