Two Feet Are Better Than Four Wheels

Park and Stride
16 October 2006

Haven CE Methodist Primary School together with Eastbourne Borough Council have set up a joint “park and stride” scheme to encourage parents to park, free of charge, in the car park at the waste water treatment works in Atlantic Drive, and then walk their children to the school.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment, Tourism and Economy, Councillor David Elkin says, “This is an excellent scheme, I have always known the best way to teach is by example.  Parents getting out of their cars and walking themselves sends a very positive message to the children.  Eastbourne Borough Council are very pleased to be involved.”

The school will provide parents with special “park and stride” permits to display in their cars.

Andrew Jervis, Deputy Headteacher of the Haven School “The Park and Stride scheme came about as a result of producing our school travel plan. This involved consulting with parents and pupils on how they would like to travel to school. The majority of those surveyed said they would like to travel either on foot or cycle. The Park and Stride scheme is one way we are enabling this to happen and is particularly useful for those parents who have an onward journey to make after the school run.”
