Shelter Returns from the Ashes

16 October 2006

One of the two thatched shelters between the Wish Tower and Holywell that were badly damaged by fire is to be rebuilt and the other to have part of its thatched roof replaced.  The burnt out shelter has remained closed since the incident because of the damage caused during the fire.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment, Tourism and Economy, Councillor David Elkin says, “I am heartened that refurbishment work can finally start on the shelter.  They have been a sad sight all summer.  It is very pleasing to know that the Council had the foresight to ensure they had insurance cover to enable them to be returned to their former glory.”

Work is due to start on the shelters to bring them back into full use again.  The shelters face the sea and give people an excellent resting place while taking a walk along the seafront.  Local firm Ellis builders will start work on the 16 October.
