24 October 2006
Over the next few weeks canvassers will call at the homes of Eastbourne residents who have not yet returned their electoral registration forms. All canvassers will carry a photo identification badge issued by Eastbourne Borough Council.
Every year, local councils across the country have to send a registration form to every home in their area. This is generally done at the beginning of September. If you don’t return the form a personal visit has to be made to your home.
You must by law give the names of everyone living at your address who is entitled to vote. The form gives clear guidance on who should be listed. The canvassers can also give help and advice.
The information received will be used for all parliamentary and council elections held after the 1st December 2006. There is a box on the form that you can tick to ensure that personal information is not used by marketing and direct mail companies.
If you name is not included you will lose your right to vote. It may also affect your credit status as the register is used to confirm your home address and length of residence.
For advice, help, or to request a form, please contact the council’s electoral office on the helpline number (01323) 415036 or email
elections@eastbourne.gov.uk. The council can also supply registration forms in other languages and in large print.
