This year’s Beachy Head Marathon is now full with a record number of entries, bringing it into the UK’s top ten biggest marathons.
The 1,750 entries received this year means the marathon finishes up front in the UKs biggest marathons: out of the 50 taking place across the country, only five others attract as many entrants. With an extra 250 applicants securing places compared to last year, the marathon proves its popularity both in the running world and as a great day out.
Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Councillor David Elkin, says, “The success of this event has really been a run away success. Entrants came in thick and fast from the start, and it is great to have the marathon at maximum capacity. We have participants from around Europe and as far a field as New York.”
The course is both scenic and demanding, with uphill sections totalling 3000ft over the route, passing over open downland, forest and coastal footpaths, taking in traditional Sussex villages along the way. The event can be followed across the Downs or spectators can enjoy time in Eastbourne supporting participants at the start and finish line. Participants are aged from 15 to 83, and two groups have entered 37 runners and joggers each.
The Beachy Head Marathon will be started at 9am by The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Colin Belsey at St. Bedes School, King Edwards Parade, Eastbourne on Saturday 28 October.
