Defibrillator For Langney Shopping Centre

Presentation
31 October 2006

A new defibrillator will be formally presented by Former Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs Graham Marsden, to Barry Reece, Centre Manager, at Langney Shopping Centre on Tuesday 31 October at 11 am.

A year of fundraising by the Former Mayor and Mayoress and his chosen Charity C.R.Y. (Cardiac Risk in the Young), has raised enough money to purchase both a defibrillator for Langney Shopping Centre and an ECG machine for the Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Councillor Marsden, says “My fundraising committee worked very hard throughout the year to raise funds for my chosen charity C.R.Y. (Cardiac Risk in the Young).   The final result has enabled us to purchase these two machines to be used in the local community.   I hope that the location of a defibrillator in the Langney Shopping Centre will make a difference in the event of a cardiac emergency.”

Defibrillation is part of a ‘Chain of Survival’ which includes calling 999 for the emergency services, giving basic life support to provide oxygen to the brain and other vital organs, defibrillation itself, and more advanced medical and paramedical care.  Defibrillation is a highly effective treatment for cardiac arrest and needs to be performed at the earliest opportunity.

Barry Reece, Centre Manager, says, “With so many shoppers visiting the centre each week, it is reassuring to know that life saving equipment is now close at hand.”

Jenny and Nigel Cole, representatives for CRY, say, “We are so pleased that a defibrillator, kindly donated by the previous Mayor, will be sited at the shopping centre to provide essential emergency treatment for anyone suffering a cardiac arrest.”

CRY is a National Charity and its principal aims are to:-
  • To raise awareness of the symptoms of cardiac conditions in the general public and also the medical profession.
  • To emphasize the considerable amount that can be done to help people who have been diagnosed as having a cardiac condition.
  • To support medical research into Sudden Death Syndrome.
  • To offer counsel and support to families affected.
  • To promote ECG Testing and Mobile Cardiac Screening events to the public.

CRY recommends that screening is requested via your GP if there have been any young sudden deaths in the family, or if the young person is suffering from any unexplained symptoms of: Chest Pain (exercise related), Breathlessness, Palpitations, Dizziness, Fainting.
