Mayor Opens Eastbourne Beer Festival
10 October 2006

Eastbourne Beer Festival visitors can look forward to learning more about their ale with special tutored tasting sessions at the festival this Saturday.

The festival, which runs from 12 – 14 October, includes over 120 real ales, plus a selection of world wines, ciders and perries, and will host tutored tasting sessions on Saturday afternoon, presented by local brewers Miles Jenner from Harvey’s and Mark Tranter at Dark Star.

Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Councillor David Elkin said “Real ale can be appreciated just as much as fine wine and this is a great chance to enjoy a unique tasting session.  Choosing the right ale to complement your meal can make a real difference, and understanding ingredients and brewing methods is key to developing your own tastes.”

Both breweries are supplying real ales at the festival, including the return of festival favourite the Star of Eastbourne, by Harvey’s of Lewes, one of the most popular real ales on offer at the festival.  Visitors can also sample the wide range of ales from the raspberry flavoured ‘Fruit Bat’ and malty caramel undertones of ‘What the Fox’s Hat’ to the dark mocha tasting ‘Karma Sumatra’, enhanced with pure Sumatran coffee.

On the bottled beers bar, festival visitors can drink around the world from Brazil’s Brahma Chop to the classic Belgian white beers, or try the UK’s very own Banana Bread Beer.  Drinkers can also triple their choice as new third pint schooners are supplied following their success at this years Great British Beer Festival in London.

Jazz, blues and acoustic sets fill the entertainment programme, along with pub games, morris dancing, a jam night open to local musicians and festival favourite the Oompah band headlines on two nights.

Eastbourne Beer festival is held at the Winter Garden and run in conjunction with CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), Harvey’s of Lewes and Waverley TBS.  The festival includes both evening sessions and a Saturday afternoon session and tickets are selling out fast.
