White Ribbon Day

21 November 2006

In Eastbourne a garden of white tulips and daffodils is to be planted at Princes Park to remember all the victims of domestic violence, funded by the Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnership.  A Planting Ceremony is to be held on Tuesday 28 November 2006 at 11am which will be attended by the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Colin Besley and the Leader of the Council, Councillor Ian Lucas.

White Ribbon Day on Saturday 25th November is an International Day to remember victims of domestic violence.  Events are being held in the Borough and across the county to mark the day.

Chief Inspector Bob Gough, Chair of the Eastbourne Crime Reduction Partnerhsip said: ”It is important to raise awareness of domestic violence and its victims. The Partnership supports the work carried out by refuge and the domestic abuse service and provides funding for the this service on an annual basis.“

Domestic violence makes up 25% of violent crime figures.  By promoting  domestic violence services and highlighting the issue the partnership aims to reduce the number of repeat incidents, by raising awareness and creating a culture that it is unaccepting of domestic violence.

In Eastbourne there were 1265 incidents of domestic violence reported to the police during 2005/06.  Research has shown that 76% incidents go unreported, making domestic violence a hidden crime.

Nationally one in two women who are killed each week will be as a result of domestic violence.  The impact and affect on children can lead to serious long-term problems effecting their development and social well-being as it is estimated that 9 out of 10 incidents will involve a child being in the same or next room.  One out of four women and one out of six men will experience domestic violence during their lifetime.
