Remember, Remember the 14th November!

Archery children prepare a lottery banner
1 November 2006

A huge campaign is being launched to Eastbourne residents. A local project to resurface Archery Recreation Ground to create a community sports facility is going head to head with a community play project in Laughton for £50,000 of lottery funding.

We need you the people of Eastbourne to back the town by voting on the day. Our project ‘Goodbye Red Gra, Hello Tarmac’, will be aired on ITV Meridian South East regional news at 6pm on Tuesday 14 November. The voting lines open at 9am on the day of broadcast and close at midnight.  You can find out the telephone number for the Eastbourne project by looking in the Mirror or by looking on Eastbourne Borough Council's website or The Big Lottery Fund website from 9am on the day of broadcast.

Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Ian Lucas says, “This is a potentially brilliant opportunity to have this area regenerated, retarmacked and lined, and improved fencing and equipment, through a new initiative funded by the National Lottery. On November 14th, local people will be able to vote between this project and a similar one in Lewes.”

If Eastbourne Borough Council’s project receives the most votes and is awarded the £50,000 grant, it will be used to replace the existing, dated Red Gra surface (which is like gravel) with tarmac to create a suitable surface for a variety of activities such as street soccer, mini tennis, netball, street skating and basketball. A dividing fence will also be erected through the middle of the site to create two areas that would allow different activities to run at the same time. If the grant is successful the council have committed sports development funding to increase free of charge activities for young people at the site.
