The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Colin Belsey, will observe the two minutes silence in the Arndale Centre on Saturday 11 November at 11.00am, whilst the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Patrick Bowker, will attend a similar event at the War Memorial Houses in Victoria Drive.
The Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Colin Belsey, says, “The Royal British Legion is the UK's leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served and are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants. Currently, nearly 10.5 million people are eligible for support and they receive thousands of calls for help every year.” Throughout Saturday the Mayor will visit various outlets in the town which sell the poppies.
On Sunday 12 November at 10.40am the Mayor and Mayoress, the Deputy Mayor and Nigel Waterson MP, together with members of Eastbourne Borough Council will attend a Remembrance Service at the War Memorial. The Service will be conducted by Reverend (Wing Commander) Howard John, RAF (Rtd.). Also attending will be members of the crew of HMS Puncher, together with Honorary Aldermen, Freemen and past Mayors. The Eastbourne Citadel Salvation Army Band will provide the music.
At 3.00pm the Mayor will visit the Ruthless Memorial at Butts Brow where he will take part in a short Service and will lay a wreath in memory of the crew of US B-24D Liberator bomber 'Ruth-Less' who lost their lives when their plane crashed into the hillside in February 1944.
On Sunday evening the commemorations will draw to a close with the Annual Festival of Remembrance at the Congress Theatre at 7.30pm where the Mayor will joined by:
Major General John Moore-Bick CBE DL, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for East Sussex
Mrs Anne Moore-Bick, County Chairman for SSAFA
Members of the Eastbourne Combined Ex-Services Association
The Eastbourne Scottish Pipe Band and Eastbourne Silver Band will provide the music accompaniment throughout the evening.
