The health and safety team at Eastbourne Borough Council are joining forces with the Health and Safety Executive and Sussex Authorities to launch Fit3, a new campaign to reduce injury and ill health at work.

The ‘Fit for work, fit for life, fit for tomorrow’ campaign will see health and safety officers working with local businesses to improve safety and reduce stress, ill health and absence among staff.

Fit3 will focus on different issues every month starting with height awareness.

“Falls are the biggest killer in the workplace and cause 400 major injuries nationally each year,” said Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Housing, Health and Community Services Councillor Sandie Howlett, “A third of these injuries are the result of falls from ladders and stepladders.”

“It’s important that local employers are doing everything they can to avoid injuries to their staff,” Councillor Howlett continued. “So, we’ll be trying to educate employers and their staff on safer ways of working at height and using safer equipment.”

In the coming months, the Fit3 campaign will also focus on slips and trips, manual handling, work related stress, moving goods safely, work place transport and disease reduction.
