Planning for 11,000 Young Visitors

A group that oversees the planning around the language students that visit and stay in Eastbourne have started preparing for the visits this summer.  The Overseas Student Advisory Committee (OSAC) which is chaired by Eastbourne Borough Council brings together all the key partners involved in making a safe and enjoyable visit for all.

The OSAC partnership is made up of; student organisations, Eastbourne Borough Council, Sussex Police, Transport Providers and the Chamber of Commerce who work together to ensure the safety of the youngsters whilst in the town.  The group also works to provide information so that extra public transport space can be provided to cover the extra demand.

Jill Wright from CATS student organisation says, “I feel the OSAC partnership works very well for all parties. We strive together to make a happy and safe environment for our foreign visitors so they can enjoy the hospitality of our town. It obviously works as many of our groups return year after year”.

The host families are vital to providing an enjoyable stay for the youngsters.  Youngsters are provided with a bedroom and eat their meals with the host family.  When they are not taking part in activities with their student organisation they can spend time in the town or with their host family.

Every host family is checked to make sure they will provide a safe and happy environment in their home along with Operation Columbus which is organised by the police to help keep them safe on the streets.  These measures help to ensure all the youngsters go home happy and tell their friends and family about Eastbourne.

Some students stay and study for several months which gives their parents a chance to visit them and stay in Eastbourne while doing so.  Many of the youngsters will buy souvenirs, clothes, and eat out in local restaurants, all helping the economy of the town.  All host families receive a payment to help pay for washing of clothes and feeding the youngsters during their stay.
