School pupils Michaela Coady and Max Hollobone will represent classmates at West Rise Primary School in an official ceremony to bury a time capsule underneath the new Cultural Centre in Devonshire Park. Michaela and Max will join the Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Ian Lucas, after their class entered a competition to find the perfect list of items for the capsule. Emma Gibson, site manager at local construction company Bluestone, which is building the new cultural centre, will also join the school pupils.
Councillor Lucas had the difficult task of judging over 150 ideas, he said, “As soon as I saw how creative all the children had been I knew there couldn’t possibly be just one winner. I was so impressed with the imaginative and inspired thinking that was present in all the entries we received. I’m delighted that Michaela and Max are helping to send the time capsule deep into the foundations.
The items inside the time capsule donated by the project’s building contractors Bluestone, include a copy of the Eastbourne Herald, an Eastbourne Borough Football Shirt donated by the club, a picture of the town centre, a set of commemorative stamps that feature Beachy Head and a book about Eastbourne donated by Gardners Books.
When the Cultural Centre opens in 2007 it will inspire every visitor to think more widely about the world around them. Eastbourne is very fortunate to have such an exciting development taking place in the heart of the town.”
The time capsule will disappear into a 3 cubic metre hole. When the capsule has been lowered it will be buried underneath tons of earth and concrete, sealing it for eternity.
