Students Raise Funds to Visit Uganda

Sussex Downs College students are holding a sponsored event at Fitness First on Tuesday 21st March and Wednesday 22nd March, to raise money for a trip to a rural village in Uganda.  For three weeks in June they will be building a community centre and assessing the needs of the village for future work.  They will also be involved with teaching and assisting in an AIDS orphanage.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Graham Marsden, says, “I am always pleased to help promote local young people campaigning to raise funds in support of those in the third world needing our help.  The fact that local businesses are helping to sponsor the project is an indication of its worth.   I wish them every success with their efforts.”

In order to raise the money, the students are going to be running, cycling and rowing the distance from London to Kampala (Capital of Uganda) – a total of 6453 Kms (4000 Miles), using equipment at Fitness First in the Crumbles. Each student will cover 307 Kms (190 Miles) during a 32-hour period.

So far, sponsors include Glaxo-Smith Kline and Fitness First itself.   Any companies interested in sponsoring this worthy cause should contact one of the Chairs of the Sponsorship Committee: Kirsty Ruse on 07851 402125 or Nikita Silburn on 07774 538617.
