Mayor helps Plant Trees in Meads

The Mayor helping to plant a tree
Eastbourne Mayor Graham Marsden and Mayoress Kay Marsden will attend a tree planting ceremony on March 16, 3pm, at Gaudick Road, Meads. The event is kindly sponsored by Fivewalk Homes, local developers of the luxury Sunnymead apartments, adjacent to the planting site.

The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Graham Marsden, says, "The beautiful tree-lined avenues of our town have always been part of our environmental heritage.  It is a pleasure to be involved in delivering a programme that ensures the continuity of that reputation. This scheme is the culmination of a successful planting season in the Meads, where the Borough Council has worked in partnership with the local community and local developers to replant the historic avenues.  Thanks to Fivewalk Homes future generations will see the benefit of the tree planting programme in Gaudick Road."

This scheme recreates the historic avenue planting in the road, using carefully selected specimens with particular qualities. Five Tilia cordata ‘Greenspire’, also known as Small-leaved Lime, are to be planted directly opposite the luxury Sunnymead development.

This tree variety is ideal for avenues as it has a medium mature size and is tolerant of an urban setting. Its pyramidal form replicates the shape of the original Wheatley Elms that were used in avenue planting by the Victorian town designers, retaining the area’s original beauty and planting tradition. It suits the location perfectly as it echoes Sunnymead’s original Victorian architecture, whilst showcasing contemporary grandeur.

“I am incredibly proud to be a part of this ceremony and participate in this acclaimed tradition, especially being able to offer Sunnymead residents an even more spectacular view,” said Andrew Mackelden, Fivewalk Homes.
