Lord Burlington is officially opening this year's exhibition at the Heritage Centre on 4th April at 10.45am. The exhibition is entitled “The Humour of Donald McGill” and has been kindly loaned to the Eastbourne Society by John Wilton. The exhibition will remain open until the end of this year's Victorian Festival on 7th October.
The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Graham Marsden, says, “I am very pleased to welcome Lord Burlington to Eastbourne to open this exhibition. The Eastbourne Society should be thanked for the time and effort that their members have taken to display the work. These postcards are so representative of 20th Century seaside humour and it is important that their place in history is celebrated.”
Donald McGill spent his life creating drawings which were reproduced as postcards. They sold in their millions from 1904 through to the mid 1960’s. Today they are collectors’ items and renowned for their social observation and “naughty” humour.
The Heritage Centre is located at 2 Carlisle Road, on the corner of Compton Street, opposite the Winter Garden. Opening hours from 2nd April through to October are 2.00pm – 5pm daily, including bank holidays. Entrance is £1 for adults and 50p for children and students.
