Safer Town For Students

A code of practice is being prepared for foreign student organisations, the Police and Eastbourne Borough Council to sign up to.  The document will set out behaviour guidelines for students while in the town.

Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Ian Lucas says, “Every year 15,000 foreign students come to Eastbourne which is great for our local economy.  This Code of Practice is about increasing their safety whilst here, and thereby securing this vital contribution to our economy for the long term.”

Eastbourne Police District Commander says “We are determined to reduce incidents involving overseas students.  We are working with our partner agencies to ensure they have a safe and enjoyable stay in Eastbourne.   However we need the support of the language schools in this and the implementation of this code will be a positive step towards achieving this.”

The code will include information on the following

  • Checking host families
  • Curfew times for students alone or accompanied by an adult
  • students to leader ratio
  • Transport for the youngsters while in the town
  • No students should have alcohol

The long term aim of the code of practice is to make Eastbourne a safer place for students to visit.
