Three schools around Eastbourne will soon be planting a mystery seed in their gardens as part of the Young Growers Competition launching Eastbourne’s new food and wine festival, Feastbourne 2006.
Bourne Primary School, Oakwood School and Ocklynge Junior School were donated the mystery seeds by Eastbourne Garden Company and will be burying them deep in the earth this week, eagerly waiting to see what bursts from the soil in October. Whichever school grows the biggest and best specimen will be awarded a prize by Eastbourne Business Education Partnership at the Produce on the Prom market.
Eastbourne Borough Council Spokesperson for Tourism, Councillor David Elkin, says, “Nutrition is such a prominent issue at the moment and this kind of event really encourages children to see the fun behind growing their own food and eating healthily. We’re all excited to see what on earth will spring from these tiny seeds over the summer months.”
Produce on the Prom will bring together the finest harvests from local and regional farmers, offering visitors a tempting taster of Sussex. This is just one micro-event of many planned for October’s Feastbourne; new to Eastbourne’s yearly calendar of events.
The ten day celebration already has a jam packed line up of events which begin on Thursday 12 October with the enormously successful annual Beer Festival. With a tastebud explosion of culinary treats, insightful education and gourmet pride, organisations have been lining up to become involved in what will be the biggest food and wine festival ever to be held in Eastbourne.
Visitors will be able to sample the best chocolates of the world at Chocolate, The Elixir of Love, exclusively tour the famous cellars and kitchen of the Grand Hotel, taste the finest in wines at specialist Cooden Cellars Annual Wine Tasting, demonstrate relay skills in the Waiter’s Dash and have the opportunity to become a published food critic with an entry to Eat Your Words.
Co-ordinated by Cooden Cellars, Eastbourne Borough Council, University of Brighton, Eastbourne Chamber of Commerce, Eastbourne Hospitality Association, Taste of Sussex and Waterfront Traders Association, organisers are encouraging local pubs and restaurants to offer themed menus and special discounts to celebrate Sussex produce at its finest.
