A Blue Plaque to recognise the bravery of Company Sergeant-Major Nelson Victor Carter is being supported by Eastbourne Borough Council.
Eastbourne Borough Councillor David Stevens says, “I am very proud to have been a member of the Royal Sussex Regiment and feel that it is time that Company Sergeant Major Carter’s bravery and award was recognised locally. I have a personal interest in the Victoria Cross award through two members of my family going back to 1857 and my wife’s great uncle at Rourke’s Drift.”
The Council wants to see the town acknowledge the outstanding bravery shown by Sergeant-Major Carter who was awarded the Victoria Cross in the September after his death on the 30th June 1916.
He received this high honour while retrieving the wounded following four waves of attacks on the German lines during which he displayed continuous leadership and courage, gazetted on 9 September 1916
It is proposed to place the Blue Plaque outside his former home in Greys Road. Sergeant Major Carter is the only holder of the Victoria Cross to be born in Eastbourne.
The plaque will be organised by the Eastbourne Society in conjunction with the Royal Sussex Regiment Association who are seeking £1500 for the manufacture of the plaque, and would welcome voluntary donations.
