Eastbourne Borough Council is inviting all local children to put their thinking caps on and come up with ideas for six items to be placed in a time capsule that will be buried underneath the new Cultural Centre in Devonshire Park. The competition winner will join the Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Lucas, at a ceremony to bury the capsule deep in the foundations.
Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Lucas said: “I think this is a wonderful competition and I’m sure we will receive lots of very creative ideas. The time capsule should include items that best represent Eastbourne at the beginning of the 21st century as they will be buried under an important civic building that will represent Eastbourne to future generations of the local community and visitors to the town.”
The Cultural Centre, which will open in mid 2007, will make the visual arts fully accessible for everyone in Eastbourne for the first time. Local children are already playing a big part in the future of the centre with school workshops looking at the internal design.
Councillor Lucas added: “In addition to the creation of a landmark building for the 21st century, the Cultural Centre will provide a home for the acclaimed Towner art collections, art exhibitions of international standard, enhanced conference halls, and a suite of community and education rooms that will offer superb learning opportunities for all. It is very exciting that future generations of children will benefit from a cultural education in the heart of our wonderful town.”
The deadline for entries is Friday 24 February. Please send your list of six time capsule items to Julia Cutty, Cultural Centre Development Team, 68 Grove Road, Eastbourne, BN21 4UH
