Unsightly chewing gum has recently been removed from the footpaths and paved areas in Terminus Road at a cost of £7,500.
Using high pressure water Intex Cleaning Services worked through the night to remove the gum from the town centre footpaths.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Economy, Tourism and Environment Councillor David Elkin says, “To minimise the environmental impact the contractor does not use chemicals - just a pressure steam clean operation. This is a very expensive operation and we would ask residents and visitors to the town to act responsibly by disposing of their gum in litter bins and not on the pavement”. Councillor Elkin went on to say that “with new enforcement powers available to the Council, offenders should be warned that our enforcement team now has the ability to issue on the spot fines for this type of offence.”
