Drop Litter – You Will Be Fined

A new enforcement policy will see officers from Eastbourne Borough Council issuing fixed penalty fines to people who commit environmental crimes.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Economy, Tourism and Environment Councillor David Elkin says, “I'm sure Eastbourne residents will be pleased to see that the Council has kept its promises and given the Enforcement Team the tools to do their job. Initially there will be period of warnings but offenders should have no doubt that officers will use their new powers to the full.”

Another enforcement officer is due to be appointed increasing the team by more than 30%. In the last few months the officers have attended almost 2000 incidents. The officers have also worked hard to increase their profile by talking to residents and participating in public meetings.

The new powers will tackle people who are guilty of the following offences
  • Dropping litter
  • Fly tipping
  • Graffiti
  • Fly-posting
  • Abandoning cars
  • Dog fouling
  • Abandoning Shopping and Luggage Trolleys

The Council will work within Government guidelines for the level of the fixed penalty fines which will be charged. Prior to issuing their first fines however, the Council will be committed to a public awareness campaign to ensure that residents and visitors to the Borough are aware of the new penalties.
