Countdown to CRY Fitness Challenge

The CRY Fitness Challenge will take place on Saturday 4th February 2006, beginning at 10.00am and finishing approximately 3.00pm in the Main Square of the Arndale Centre in order to raise money for the Mayor’s chosen charity, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Councillor Graham Marsden, says, “I hope that as many people as possible will call in at the Main Square of the Arndale on Saturday and support the young people who are taking part in the Fitness Challenge. Every week eight young people die without warning from undiagnosed heart conditions. This is a situation that cannot be allowed to continue.”

Teams of local young people from Cavendish School, Park College, Eastbourne Rowing Club, Eastbourne Police Cadets and the University of Brighton, will compete on fitness equipment in order to promote the importance of exercise and the need for research into Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.

The participants will have personal sponsorship pledges and in addition there will be a collection on the day for spectators to contribute.

Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, but for those who find exercise too boring or too time consuming, a good motivator is to combine exercise with a fun hobby, such as dancing. The choices are extensive: Ballroom, Salsa, ballet, tap, barn, disco, modern, Morris, line, square, jive and jazz dancing. Most are associated with a social side which add another enjoyable element to life.

Benefits of exercising include improved muscle-tone, joints and bones, improved circulation, better energy level, better sleep pattern, healthier weight, protection against heart disease, relief from stress, feel and look better, and most likely having fun and developing social life.

CRY was chosen as this year’s Mayoral charity, not only because of its importance in raising awareness of this type of sudden death and providing support for grieving families, but also because a young Cavendish School student, Jeremy Cole, known to the Mayor, died suddenly in 1995 with no prior warning that anything was wrong.
