Work on a new Cultural Festival for Eastbourne was given the go ahead at a Council Committee meeting this week.
The Festival will be timed to coincide with the formal opening of the new Cultural Centre in March 2008 and it is anticipated that the Eastbourne Festival will include a special event on Saturday 15 to celebrate the opening of the Centre. The Festival will then run for two weeks until Sunday 30 March to include the Easter holiday weekend.
Leader of Eastbourne Borough Council, Councillor Ian Lucas says, “The Eastbourne Festival will be an opportunity for the community to celebrate its cultural activity in a way that it chooses, such as shows, concerts, public displays, etc. It is an ideal opportunity for Eastbourne to celebrate the art and culture that exists within the town, to bring it together and showcase under one umbrella.”
Local schools, colleges and the University of Brighton will be encouraged to take part in the Festival and all school children within the Borough will be encouraged to visit the Cultural Centre during the Festival. Inevitably there will also be interest from outside the town, from tourists and residents from the outlying area and from people with a specific interest in Culture.
Information about the Festival will be available on a dedicated website that will go live in March 2007, when a launch will take place, one year prior to the event taking place.
Any groups or event representatives wishing to know more about the Festival or how to get involved in supporting or taking part, should contact Marie Thompson, Festival Co-ordinator on 01323 415415.
