Election Changes on the Way

The green light has been given by the Secretary of State for Eastbourne to change the way it elects it councillors. Currently a third of the council stands to be re-elected each year but from May 2007 all Eastbourne Councillors will be required to stand for election every 4 years.

To make sure that you are able to vote in the whole council elections in May 2007 please ensure that you look out for the registration form that is currently being despatched to all households.

Where the details remain unchanged, re-registering is easy. By simply dialling the FREEPHONE number, and keying-in the special two-part security code printed on the form, the caller is prompted to confirm the household details and the call is complete. The service is a fully-automated touch-tone system that is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week throughout the canvass period. The system also accommodates users wishing to add or remove their names from the edited version of the register and requests for postal vote applications.

For households where there are changes to the details on the form then you must amend the form and return it in the pre-paid envelope provided.

While it is not compulsory to vote, it is a legal requirement for everyone aged 16 and over to provide the Electoral Registration Officer with the information needed to include their names on the Electoral Register.
For advice, help, or to request a form, contact the Electoral Office on the helpline number 01323 415036 or email elections@eastbourne.gov.uk

The Electoral Office can also supply registration forms in other languages and large print.
