Compton Place
The Duke of Devonshire’s magnificent Compton Place Estate is a fine example of an elegant Georgian property with sash windows and decorative pediments over the front door.
Like many surviving Georgian houses, Compton Estate is three storeys high, has a gabled roof and is constructed in brick featuring an orderly row of windows across the second storey.
Although Compton Place was built in part in Jacobean times the house was extensively rebuilt in the eighteenth century.
Inside the décor is trapped in a time-warp of exquisite Georgian decadence with oak panelled rooms, high ceilings and traditional fireplaces. It is an excellent example of the refined characteristics of Georgian architecture.
Gildredge Park Manor House
Another of Eastbourne’s most renowned Georgian properties is the old Manor House in Gildredge Park.
The house is a superior brick mansion set into grounds with extensive, tastefully laid out lawns.
