Council Tax bands are calculated by the Valuation Office Agency.
The current bands for England are:
| BAND | RANGE OF VALUES |
| A | Up to £40,000 |
| B | £40,001 to £52,000 |
| C | £52,001 to £68,000 |
| D | £68,001 to £88,000 |
| E | £88,001 to £120,000 |
| F | £120,001 to £160,000 |
| G | £160,001 to £320,000 |
| H | £320,000 and above |
These bands are based on property values on 1st April 1991.
You may appeal against the banding of your property if:
- there is a significant reduction in the value of your home because, for example, the area around your home has changed dramatically, or part of your home has been demolished or adapted for someone with a disability
- your property has been substantially extended or reduced
- your property has been partly or fully converted from domestic to commercial use
You can also appeal within 6 months:
- of a band change to your property made by the Listing Officer
- of a band change to a property similar to yours made by the Valuation Office
- of moving into a property
- if there is a significant increase in the value of your home because, for example, you have had an extension built it will not be revalued until it is sold
Appeals are made directly to the Valuation Office. If you have a valid reason to appeal you need to obtain a form to make a proposal to alter the entry shown in the Council Tax Valuation List for your property. This is available from the Listing Officer at your regional Valuation Office.
If the Valuation Office has already considered and decided on an appeal for the same property, you cannot appeal again.
If you appeal against your band, you must still pay your bill while you are waiting for the appeal to be dealt with. If your appeal is successful any overpayment will be refunded.
