What is Re-Use?

Re-use is defined in the regulations as;

” the use by a person of a document held by the Council for a purpose other than the initial purpose within that Council’s public task for which the document was produced.”

When the Council releases information which has been requested using the Access to Information legislation such as the Freedom of Information Act and Environmental Information Regulations, the applicant must ask if they can re-use the information for a purpose other than the initial purpose for which the document was produced.

The third party’s intentions may be for commercial purposes, in a way which, without permission, might breach the Council’s copyright or affect the Intellectual Property Rights of another individual. It is this kind of situation which the regulations are most concerned about.
