The Mayor attended 30 engagements in September 2009. A selection of these engagements are detailed below.
The Mayor’s Civic Service was held on Sunday 6 September 2009 at Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church. The service was very well attended and only standing room was left. Special guests included Mayor’s from other towns, Councillors and other religious leaders.
On Friday 11 September 2009 the Mayor opened the 3rd Eastbourne Scout Group at Our Lady of Ransom Church. The 3rd Eastbourne Scout Group was formed about 8 years ago. The Cub Pack, over the years grew in strength and numbers and was able to attract more adult helpers. This enabled the group to open a Scout Troop, which the cubs move on to when they reach 10 ½ to 11 years of age. The Cub Pack came on a visit to the Town Hall last year and by way of a “Thank You” to the Mayor and Mayoress, the cubs raised £75.00 for the Mayor’s Charity by holding a Cake Sale. They invited the Mayor to their meeting on 11 September 2009 and after presenting the cheque they made him and the Mayoress honorary members of the Pack and then invited them to “move on” with the cubs who were going up to Scouts for the inaugural meeting.
The Mayor and Mayoress attended the Sovereign Radio Local Heroes Awards at the Grand Hotel on 25 September 2009. The evening was a huge success celebrating the unsung heroes of our community. The winners included Will Morris, winner of the Emergency Services Award, for rescuing two swimmers when he was on duty with the voluntary lifeguards in Seaford; James Julian, winner of the Child of Achievement award, who after having a very difficult upbringing, overcame this and is now working for a celebrity chef at a top hotel in Plymouth; and Nicki and Brian Loftus, winners of the Make a Community Difference Award, for their dedicated work for the Langney Area Panel.
Eastbourne Victorian Festival made a return to the town over the weekend of 26 and 27 September 2009. On Saturday 26 September the Mayor and Mayoress, along with the Station Master and a host of dignitaries, met Her Gracious Majesty, Queen Victoria, and her consort Prince Albert, at Eastbourne train station. A choir from Parkland Junior School serenaded the Royal Couple, and the Royal party then processed up Grove Road and enjoyed a private reception in the Town Hall.
