The Mayor attended 35 engagements in June 2009. A selection of engagements are detailed below.
The Friends of Eastbourne Hospitals held their Summer Fete on Ocklynge School fields on 6 June, and the Mayor and Mayoress were very happy to attend. The fete raised over £6,200 for the local hospital.
On 7 June 2009, the Mayor was very happy to start the Cancer Research Race for Life at Eastbourne Sports Park. 1200 participants, all female, took part in the race, including a number of Eastbourne Borough Council Staff, and raised vital funds for this very worthy charity.
One of the town’s major events, the AEGON International tennis tournament, took place in June and the Mayor and Mayoress were very pleased to welcome HRH The Duchess of Gloucester to Eastbourne on Friday 19 June, so that she could enjoy a luncheon at the Devonshire Park complex and view some games of tennis. The Mayor and Mayoress returned on Saturday 20 June for Finals Day and were pleased to present the winners with their trophies.
A major national event took place in June, Armed Forces Day, to celebrate the services of the past, present and future of the members of the Armed Forces. Eastbourne began a week of events on Monday 22 June, with the raising of a special Armed Forces Day flag at the Redoubt Fortress, at 10.30am, to coincide with other national flag-raising ceremonies. Other events were held at the Redoubt Fortress from Friday 26 June to Sunday 28 June, including a Drumhead Ceremony where local veterans were presented with special badges.
On Tuesday 23 June, the Mayor and Mayoress were invited to attend Wimbledon and joined a number of other Mayor’s in the Royal Box, which was preceded by a luncheon.
The Mayor officially launched his Charity appeal for the year at the MS Centre on St Leonards Road on 24 June 2009. The Mayor has chosen this year to support Eastbourne and South Wealden Multiple Sclerosis Society.
On 29 June 2009, the Mayor and Mayoress joined volunteers from Eastbourne and District Alzheimer’s Society for a Tea Party at the Langham Hotel, and at the same time were very pleased to present a cheque for £12,868.49, which was raised by the Mayor and his fundraising committee during the last year.
