The Mayor attended 26 engagements in January. A selection of engagements are detailed below.
The Mayor opened the New Year by attending a Peace Vigil on the Town Hall steps, organised by Eastbourne for Peace and Liberty. The Mayor addressed those assembled and drew attention to the need to support the World March for Peace and Non-Violence, which starts on 2 October 2009 from New Zealand and ends on 2 January 2010 in Argentina.
On two occasions during January the Mayor met with Kingsmere Camera Club. Firstly he attended their meeting at Conqueror Hall where members of the club were invited to take photographs of the Mayor and Mayoress in their full regalia. On the second occasion the group visited the Mayor in his Parlour at the Town Hall and presented the photographs from the previous meeting to him. The Mayor then judged the photographs and awarded prizes to the winner of the best photograph and the runner-up. The Mayor was very impressed with all of the photographs and is keen to be involved with the club again in the future.
The Mayor was pleased to make a visit to the London University Royal Naval Unit for their Annual Reception. The reception was attended by a number of other local Mayors and students from the Unit. The Mayor of Eastbourne was invited to attend the reception by Lieutenant Tim Leeder RN, Commanding Officer of HMS Puncher. HMS Puncher is Eastbourne’s affiliated ship, and will be visiting Eastbourne from 2 – 4 April 2009.
Big time Darts made a return to the Winter Gardens in January, and the Mayor and Mayoress were pleased to attend on Friday 30 January. A great time was had by all and the Mayoress, Mrs Clare Szanto, took part in a celebrity match and managed to beat seven-times World Champion Trina Gulliver!
The Mayor rounded off the month of January by officially opening the latest phase in the £2.5 million refurbishment programme at the Sovereign Centre. Councillor Szanto cut the ribbon to open the new changing rooms. Other improvements to the centre includes extensive repair works to the fun pool, the introduction of CCTV cameras to help prevent vandalism and provide customer safety, and new windows in the gala pool.
