The Mayor attended 19 engagements in August 2009.  A selection of these engagements are detailed below.

On 1 August 2009 Beachy Head Countryside Centre celebrated its 5th Birthday, and the Mayor and Mayoress were happy to join in the celebrations and cut the birthday cake.  The Countryside Centre is a not for profit organisation, run and managed by voluntary supporters, and is located at the top of Beachy Head.  It is a free attraction and includes the Downland Experience, a special walk through the history of the downs where you can meet The Talking Shepherd, the Saxon man plus experience the feel and sound of the local wildlife.

The Eastbourne Lammas Festival is a free extravaganza of music, morris dancing, traditional giants, carnival and entertainment for everyone, and was held over the weekend of 1 and 2 August.  The Mayor and Mayoress were delighted to be invited to join in with the festivities and attended on the afternoon of Sunday 2 August 2009.  During the weekend organisers were collecting and raising funds for the RNLI and were very pleased to raise a staggering £1,327.81, which is nearly twice their previous best total.

The JPK Project aims to provide training, work and accommodation for people with learning disabilities.  On 8 August 2009, they held an Alfresco Dining and Auction fundraising evening, which the Mayor and Mayoress were pleased to attend.  The evening was a great success.

On Saturday 22 August 2009, the Mayor’s Charity Committee held a Garden Fair in the back garden of one of the committee members’ houses.  There were books, cakes, fresh produce, crafts and gifts on sale, a tombola and a guess-the-weight of the cake competition.  More than 160 people attended the event, which was a great success, and raised over £1350.00 for the Mayor’s chosen charity, Eastbourne and South Wealden Multiple Sclerosis Society.  Future Mayor’s Charity events to watch out for are the Mayor’s Charity Ball to be held at the Winter Garden on Friday 5 March 2010, and the Mayor’s Charity Golf Day at the Royal Eastbourne Golf Club on Thursday 22 April 2010.
