Archived Biography from May 2007

Born in Lawrence Town, in the dioceses of Clonfert, County Galway, Eire, in September 1934. Attended Lawrence Town National School and obtained a National Leaving Certificate.
 
Moved to Eastbourne in 1952 to undertake Nurse Training. Later met her husband at the ‘Pier Ballroom’ and went on to marry in June 1955 at Our Lady of Ransom Church.
 
After marrying, Mary discontinued her Nurse Training to have her family of seven children but continued to work as a Nursing Auxiliary within the local hospitals. She was widowed in 1982.
 
First elected for the Hampden Park Ward in 1990 and has served within this role as a local Councillor for 17 years. Throughout these years she has also undertaken the role of School Governor at St Thomas a Beckett Infant and Junior School and also is an active member of St Joachim’s Roman Catholic Church in Hampden Park.
 
In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family which now includes 11 grandchildren. She also likes dancing, the theatre and doing gardening – when she gets the time!
 
Councillor Mrs Mary Pooley is delighted and honoured to take on the role as
Mayor of Eastbourne and is looking forward to fulfilling civic duties.
