Born in Brierley Hill, Staffordshire, but moved to Formby in Lancashire at the age of 11. After leaving school she went on to a Commercial College in Southport where she studied all things secretarial (including book-keeping). Her first job was with an Accountancy firm and after two years joined the Nationwide Building Society and stayed with them until she finished work to start a family. Married Geoff in 1961 and moved to London (transferring to the Nationwide Headquarters in Holborn). The last two years of her working life she was P.A. to the then Deputy General Manager.
Most of the time in London she lived in South London (Dulwich), and her husband ran a Marketing Consultancy business in the West End. She has two children and two grandchildren. Whilst her children were growing up she was a full-time Mother.
Moved to Eastbourne in 1984, and together with her husband opened and ran The Butterfly Centre on the Seafront. Three years later her husband died of cancer but the business continued and her daughter became her business partner. Continued in business until 1999 when she decided to retire.
First joined the Council in 1991 and apart from a gap between 1995/1998 has represented the Ratton Ward. Has served on most Committees (except Planning) and was Cabinet Member for Tourism for two years. Tourism in Eastbourne is still her number one interest. Has been a Governor of Oakwood School for 12 years – serving as Chairman of the Governors for 6 years.
Leisure interests include spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren, keeping the garden neat and tidy, DIY, eating out with friends and Eastbourne Theatres. Also enjoys crossword puzzles and holidays in the sun – but only in the winter – spends all summer enjoying Eastbourne.
