The mayoralty was formed in Eastbourne in 1883. The elected Mayor of a Borough is the first citizen and 'ex officio' representative within the Borough of the Sovereign. This is depicted by the crown on the Council mace.
The Mayor takes precedence over all other guests at any function where there is no member of the Royal Family present, nor the Lord Lieutenant of the County.
The Mayor is usually a member of the Council's ruling political Group but normally adopts a non-political role. Key roles and duties of the Mayor include:
- Chairman of Full Council - The Mayor is reponsible for keeping order at Full Council meetings and ensuring that Council business proceeds in accordance with the Standing Orders of the Council
- Opening functions, events and new businesses as the Council's representative
- Attending award ceremonies and receptions at the request of local schools, businesses, voluntary and community groups
- Hosting civic receptions for overseas visitors, civic dignitaries and other guests
- Visiting individuals and groups through Eastbourne to mark celebrations such as 100th birthdays or special anniversaries
- The Mayor also nominates one or more charities which he or she will support through various fundraising events during his or her term of office.
If you wish to invite the Mayor of Eastbourne to attend or open an event or make a presentation please contact the Mayor.
