Biography

Councillor Heaps was born in Peru, brought up in India, and has lived in Eastbourne for 29 years.

She is a married mother of two, who has worked for the NHS as a registered nurse in and around Eastbourne, in the intensive care unit and coronary care, and for the last 15 years in general practice.

In the past Councillor Heaps has been a parent governor at OcklyngeSchool and was involved with her son’s Scout group.

She is a committed Christian and is currently an active member of KingsChurch and the Eastbourne Street Pastors.  During her Mayoral year Councillor Heaps would like to be able to facilitate the different denominations and faiths in Eastbourne to pray together for our lovely town.

After a life changing diagnosis in 2004, Councillor Heaps realised she wanted to give something back to her community and decided to stand at the local Council elections.  She was elected to Eastbourne Borough Council in 2007, became Deputy Mayor in 2009, and is now looking forward to taking on the role of Mayor in order to meet many new local people and to promote Eastbourne as a lively town.

Her special interests lie with the young people, the older citizens and the more vulnerable members of Eastbourne.  She is passionate about the environment and enhancing the free green spaces for our children and the generations to come.

Councillor Heaps would like to help to bring a true feeling of community to the different areas of Eastbourne, and to encourage everyone to care about their neighbours and to take responsibility for where they live and play.
