Smokefree Council
All Eastbourne Borough Council buildings have gone smokefree in advance of the new legislation which takes effect from 1 July 2007.
Smoking is not allowed in any of our offices, public buildings and indoor facilities, including theatres, sports centres and catering premises.
We have gone smokefree early because we value the health benefits to our staff and everyone who uses our services and facilities.
Being smokefree protects people from the harmful effects of breathing in secondhand smoke. We support our staff who want to give up smoking.
Helping Eastbourne Go Smokefree
The council is responsible for implementing the smokefree legislation in Eastbourne, which will apply to all workplaces and enclosed public places.
The council's Environmental Health service, working with the Healthy Eastbourne Board Tobacco Control Group, gives advice and enforces the new legislation.
We have appointed a dedicated Smokefree Officer with Department of Health funding, based in our Licensing Team for six months from June 2007.
We are raising awareness of what businesses need to do and help and advise employers - see our Local Smokefree Publicity section.
We are also publicising the help and support available to people who wish to quit smoking - see our Help to Stop Smoking section.
