Equality and Fairness Strategy

This consultation has now closed.

The Equality Act came into force in October 2010.  It brings together for the first time all the legal requirements on equality that the private, public and voluntary sectors need to follow.  The Act’s purpose is to ensure that everyone at work and everyone using a service has the right to be treated fairly.  Contained within the Act are the ‘Public Sector Equality Duty’ and associated ‘Specific Duties’.  Public authorities such as Eastbourne Borough Council are required to publish how they will comply with the public duties and consult with their communities in regard to establishing equality objectives for the council to achieve.

Equality Act 2010

The Equality and Fairness Strategy sets out what the council is doing to comply with its duties under the Equality Act 2010.  It also contains a number of equality and fairness ‘aims’ we hope to achieve, which have been influenced by feedback received from our communities and our workforce, in the past.  We are also in the process of preparing an Equality and Fairness Action Plan to complement this strategy.  The action plan will be more detailed in how we will achieve our stated aims and this is where you can really help us.

Your views are welcome

We would be very pleased to hear from you in regard to any specific equality and fairness objective(s) and/or actions you feel the council should consider and include in their future work, which fall outside the stated aims within the Strategy.

All suggestions will be considered and we will respond to everyone who contacts us in this regard and who leaves us their contact details.  Also, suggestions will go forward in a report to the Cabinet meeting at the end of March 2012 and your feedback will also inform our ongoing work in terms of refreshing our Corporate Plan priorities.  Please email: equality@eastbourne.gov.uk or you can post your feedback on the Council's facebook and twitter pages.

The consultation period on the Equality and Fairness Strategy and to gather in your ideas runs for twelve weeks until 21st March 2012.  So please come back to us with your thoughts and comments by this date.

Thank you for helping us in this way it is much appreciated.
