Fishing for Youth - Eastbourne

Fishing for Youth - Eastbourne is based on a National Fishing scheme attempting to get young people from deprived communities involved in fishing as a diversionary activity.

Eastbourne Borough Council through its Sports Development function has purchased fishing tackle to set up the project and support up to 16 anglers.

We are initially working with a group of young people from the Willingdon Trees area of Eastbourne.

We have recruited Eastbourne Police Cadets to assist on the fishing expeditions and are working closely with our Prevent and Deter Officer for support and guidance also.

We took 12 young people fishing to the Mushroom Farm in Hailsham, on Tuesday 30th May.  The feedback has been very good and the young people all enjoyed the experience and were well behaved throughout, with most catching something.

All council staff and Police Cadets have been CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked and young people completed consent forms signed by parent/guardians.

The National Fishing Authority dealing in licences has issued us with a temporary group licence to support this work free of charge.

The council’s Sports Development Budget is currently funding this project, however we have already received a proposal of funding from Places for People (formerly the North British Housing Association) which will allow the project to be sustainable.
