An indicator is data, especially facts or numbers, which shows us if we are making progress, either forwards or backwards, towards our targets.
We collect and report data from many different sources, so the time periods may not always be the same.
The Eastbourne Strategic Partnership meeting in September 2007 had the theme of Learning and Skills.
The Eastbourne Community Strategy Learning and Skills Indicators are:
Indicator 10
This indicator looks at achievement in schools:
a) The percentage of 15 year olds in schools maintained by the local authority achieving 5 or more GCSE’s at grades A*-C or level 2 equivalent.
Source: DCSF
The overall trend in exam achievement in Eastbourne is upward. Standards in Eastbourne schools and colleges are improving at a faster rate than East Sussex and nationally.
b) The educational qualifications of children looked after: percentage of young people leaving care with at least one GCSE at A*-G or GNVQ.
Source: East Sussex County Council
The achievement of looked after children shows the biggest improvement in the South East. Figures should however, be treated with caution as very small numbers of children are involved.
Indicator 11
This indicator looks at attendance in schools.
Source: East Sussex County Council
Absence from Eastbourne schools is reducing and indications are that the overall downward trend will continue. East Sussex has the best performance in reducing authorised absence in the South East.
Indicator 12
This indicator looks at what young people do when they leave school at 16.

The percentage of Year 11 leavers staying on into learning i.e. full time education or a job with training.
The majority of Year 11 leavers continue in full time education. More females than males continue in education although this gap is narrowing. In 2005 The percentage of leavers who went into full time employment dropped 2% from 2004 to 7.1%, however the number of males is still nearly double that of females.
