Health
An indicator is data, especially facts or numbers, which shows us if we are making progress, either forwards or backwards, towards our targets.
We collect and report data from many different sources, so the time periods may not always be the same.
The Eastbourne Strategic Partnership meeting in September 2006 had the theme of Health. Because of the importance and size of this theme the Social Care section of the Community Strategy will be reported separately at a later date.
The Eastbourne Community Strategy Health Indicators are:
Indicator 18
This indicator looks at deaths caused by:
a) Cancer in under 75s
Source: National Centre for Health Outcomes Development
The overall trend is slowly downward, despite a blip in 2003-2004. Overall the trend in England is down by 16% from 1996 to 2004 and there is no reason to suppose that in the long term Eastbourne will not follow this trend.
However the volatility of Eastbourne's figures make it difficult to predict with confidence that the target of a 20% reduction from a 1996 baseline can be achieved.
b) Circulatory diseases in under 75s
Source: National Centre for Health Outcomes Development
The overall trend is down by an amount consistent with the target of a 40% reduction from a 1996 baseline, with an approximate 30% fall from 1996 to 2004.
Indicator 20
b) This indicator looks at overall conceptions among girls aged less than 18 years
Source: Office of National Statistics, Teenage Pregnancy Unit
The rates for Eastbourne show no appreciable improvement with the rates varying greatly. The average rate is 47 per 1000 girls aged 15-17, with a minimum of 35 in 2001 and a maximum of 55 in 2000.
