Stick people holding hands in team work

The Compact is an agreement which sets out some basic principles for improving the way statutory authorities (e.g. Borough Council, the Primary Care Trust and the Police) and the voluntary and community sector (VCS) work in partnership.

The Compact came from a recognition by Government of the immense value of the VCS in its contribution to society, and in recognition of the need to protect the independence of the VCS in carrying out its work.

Essentially the Compact aims to make the relationship between the sectors more effective for everyone.

How does it work?

The Compact sets out some basic principles around how we should be working together. These include principles like 'mutual respect', 'equalities' and 'communication'.

The Compact is then supported by some basic ground rules called Codes of Practice which provide detail around best practice in some of the key areas where we work together.

In Eastbourne the Compact has been adopted by both Eastbourne Borough Council and the Eastbourne Strategic Partnership for its own work. Details of The Compact are included in the Council's induction process and our recruitment packs.

How will it benefit Eastbourne?

The Compact will create better, more seamless services for people living in the town, as a result of improved communication between the sectors. It will also enable people who live here to have a more effective voice in the shaping of plans and policies for the town.
