Book of Remembrance
The Book of Remembrance is the only permanent form of memorial at Eastbourne Crematorium. Each entry is inscribed by trained calligraphers and you have the choice of a simple two-line epitaph or more elaborate, five or eight line entries. Hand painted floral emblems or badges can be added to the five or eight line entries if desired. Lines are inscribed in black ink and the initial letter of the surname is illuminated in gold.
The book is made up of eight volumes, two for each quarter of the year. The pages are turned each day to display the current date. Inscriptions are often entered to make the anniversary of death but you can choose any other date that is meaningful if you prefer.
Entries may be viewed on the anniversary of the date of death or other chosen date but can also be viewed at other times. On these occasions however, we recommend that you call the office first to ensure that the correct volume is available for you to see.
Memorial Cards and Miniature Books
You can buy Memorial Cards and Miniature Books to keep at home or send to relatives or friends. These contain an exact copy of the entry recorded in the books kept on site, but can now be purchased as individual items.
Additional entries can be added to these items at a later date if required. You can view examples of these in the crematorium office.
Vases for cut flowers are provided in the book room so that anniversaries can be commemorated. Potted plants can be placed in the main chapel when services allow.
The placing of cut flowers, potted plants or other ornaments including wind chimes within the Gardens of Remembrance is discouraged as they detract from the peaceful ambience and natural beauty of the grounds.
