Purpose

In recent years the idea of a fully inclusive society has come closer to reality. There have been some advances made in building regulations and the Disability Discrimination Acts 1995 and 2005 have brought the needs of disabled people further into the limelight.

Even with the progress that is being made there is certainly not a case for people to sit back and expect that now all will  be well. In fact, now is the time for disabled people to take more responsibility for themselves especially where access to buildings, public areas and transport is concerned.

These are the reasons why Local Access Groups have sprung up around the country. They exist to put pressure on planners and developers to consider the needs of disabled people more fully.

Access Group members support the efforts of local Building Controls. They make efforts on behalf of disabled people to persuade architects, designers and local authorities to create the kind of environment that really is inclusive of all people with all kinds of abilities and disabilities.

Many of these groups often have far too few members to enable them to cover every avenue as thoroughly as they would wish. The Eastbourne Access Group is no exception so please help by joining the group.
