No Smoking Signs - Smokefree Legislation
All premises and vehicles that are required to be smokefree from 1 July 2007 have to display no smoking signs that meet the requirements in the regulations.
Even if your premises has never allowed smoking, you must still display the new signs.
To help you comply with the new law, the government sent all registered businesses no-smoking signs in a free guidance pack mailing in April 2007.
Download and Print Signs
Additional signs can be downloaded and printed from the Smokefree England website.
Businesses can also produce their own signage through commercial providers, as long as this meets the minimum requirements of the regulations.
Signs can be personalised by changing the words 'these premises' to refer to the name or type of premises, for example, 'this gym', 'this salon' or 'this restaurant'.
Signage Requirements
Premises and vehicles that are to be smokefree under the law will be required to have 'no smoking' signs in place at each entrance, displayed in a prominent position.
Approved signage should:
be a minimum area of any shape that is equal to the size A5
show the international 'no smoking' symbol, at least 70mm in diameter - currently the most commonly used minimum size
contain, in characters that can be easily read, the wording: 'No smoking. It is against the law to smoke in these premises'
For further details, including signs for vehicles, see Signage Requirements on the Smokefree England website. You can also download a factsheet on signage for churches, places of worship and church parish halls.
